VKernel Uncovers More Findings from Virtualization Management Index

Andover, MA (PRWEB) January 5, 2011

VKernel, the number-one provider of capacity management products for virtualized data centers, today issued an update to its first Virtualization Management Index (VMI). Results show a significant drop in efficiency for environments greater than 10 hosts. This decrease in virtual machine (VM) density represents nearly 50% higher cost per VM for environments greater than 10 hosts when compared to environments less than 10 hosts.

The first Virtualization Management Index was issued by VKernel in December 2010 and revealed significant under utilization of resources. Further analysis reveals this under utilization varies significantly by environment size. As the number of hosts in an enterprise grows, the density of VMs per host decreases. The result is dramatically lower VM densities for environments larger than 10 hosts resulting in 50% or higher cost per VM.

For environments with fewer than 10 hosts, the average density was nearly 18 VMs per host. Yet as the size of the environment grows to over 100 hosts, the density drops to under 9 VMs per host. The apparent conclusion is that as environments grow larger, system administrators are unable to properly manage capacity to keep consolidation ratios high. There was no statistical difference in cluster size, powered on VMs, or hardware capabilities between the host size groups.

“Capacity management is critical to ensure sustained ROI and performance for virtualized environments,” said Bryan Semple, Chief Marketing Officer, VKernel. “This additional analysis to our first Virtualization Management Index confirms the challenges that larger environments have implementing effective capacity management. As CIOs look to cut costs on an ongoing basis, virtual machine densities must improve to meet ROI objectives.”
