Tourist killers – BBC Environment
Thousands of tourist visitors to the environmentally fragile Galapagos islands threaten the survival of the animals they travel to see. Giant tortoises are infected with human diseases they have avoided for hundreds of years due to their isolation from the mainland. Learn more about these conservation issues in this short video from BBC wildlife show ‘Lonesome George and the Battle to Save Galapagos’.

your right, its too late to stop it, cause people have lived there for w hile and cant just leave, it shouldve just been prevented from happening by not lettin anyone colonise in the first place.
what makes this island so special compared to all the rest of development and destruction of habitats all over the world? Because Darwin made it famous? Because the species are so exotic and haven’t been touched in a very long time? Either way you lay judgment on what in nature should be preserved over another. If anything should be focused on it is protecting our oceans, we rely on them much more than most think.
It is thought that the plague originated in the east and migrated westward on rats.
are these animal heavy?
there should be a law against fn people going to sm places. the human race sucks.
our future with animals are getting darker by the year.
Though they are weak and always dying, the less diversity the more vulnerable any species is. The Galapagos islands have a unique mix of diversity that can’t be replicated elsewhere and would thus be a loss to the study of genetics, if nothing else.
you can say that again. poor animals.
I guess you just can´t help it. Things happened the way they happen and now it´s too late to change. Human race is too greedy. No more trees, no more air refreshing … Well we need the trees and because we need the trees, it´s too late to stop needing the trees, as the industry needs them and we need the industry. next, there are too many people who need too many wood
humans kill everything, even one another.
Very upsetting, these islands are very special. At least someone is trying to do something about this problem.
It’s sad to thin that we humans kill animals, espeically others..
the survival of the fittest idea have change… animals have the quality of cute and obedient will live and survive .On the other hand ugly and disobedient will dead and disappear. And human are the judge of that now ,not the nature. its funny in a way animals used to live to adopt to the nature but now they have to adopt to our likings .
a species that should be exterminate is human

Agree
Are you like some inteligent bird that learned to use a computer? Or are you a failed experiment?
flipping him on his back is not good for him the lungs rest on top and get pressed down by the other organs adding additional stress to sick tortoise. even if that island stayed undisturbed by humans it would only be a matter of time before an albatross or some kind of seabird with a hitchhiking virus or parasite would introduce it and cause alot of damage its a wondeful place but its days are numbered with nature and human involved
thats because humans are the fittest.
at least u got the intelligent part right but too bad u arent close to that lol
i was replying to “mrwhiteonlyxxxx”
mrwhiteonlyxxxx
that is logical and intelegent but then what
after humans are exterminated what will hapen here…. the things we left will remain and will only add more problems we sholud focus on helping species in need and cutting down on our impact on the enviornment.
Don’t worry… it will happen too… And it ll be the first time a species exterminates itself ! Congrats to us !
You have a point, but if we mould the environment to how we see fit, eventually we won’t even be able to survive.
Self destructive nature is present in all animals when they become too strong. Don’t forget, humans are not outside of nature.
lets start with you
Instead of not infesting the island with humans. They get the animals to become addicted to drugs so the filthy humans can continue their poser existence on planet earth. What a joke. They wouldn’t need tests if it wasn’t for humans. This proves humans are a disease on earth. They had a rope around the little bugger to keep em from skampering away. Why do people live there. !!!!!!!!!!!! Just realized it. It is a religious reason. Getting rid of Darwins evidence. Religion kills off life!
