The Crying Indian – full commercial – Keep America Beautiful

Earth Day, the annual day of environmental action and awareness, was first held on April 22, 1970. This past April 22nd, we finally ventured into the woods behind our house and pulled 4 putrid truck tires/mosquito farms out of the mud, along with about 200 pounds of scrap metal, engine parts, and farm equipment. The place used to be a dairy farm, and I guess “out of sight” was “out of mind”. If it were still the 70′s, cleaning up the woods would have been “outta sight” in a whole different way. Here’s a clip of The Crying Indian from the early 70′s. OK, so Chief Iron Eyes Cody wasn’t a real Native American after all. That didn’t stop the ad campaign from having a tremendous effect back then. And it’s no less relevant today. Here are some links to check out: en.wikipedia.org www.kab.org

its sad how something that was once so beautiful and pure could be turned so ugly by damn foreigners………

I rememeber this commerical as a kid. They need to show more of these POSITIVE commericals to our children, and drop those commericals about (Male Enhancment) among others. Tv has become so ridiculas!

WOW!

i get pissed off at people when i see them throw trash out of their cars on to my land

This ad has been studied psychologically and although it makes people have more pro environmental attitudes it reduces their pro environment behaviour. So as nice as an idea this add is, it’s actually bad for the environment.

@Flash13FLy That’s right. The original inhabitants (Clovis people) had it good before those “indians” came along and spoiled everything with their tribal wars, human sacrifice and canabalism.

How could someone give this a thumbs down? Let alone 9 people?

@ihateirony Link or it didn’t happen

All these stupid mfkers saying “Dont matter his race” actually it does.

Yall dont know whats its like, seeing a different race always claiming and pretending to be your race.
Yall run around “im white…BUT MY GREAT GREAT GREAT GRANDMOTHER WAS NATIVE AMERICA”
shit gets old. You say dont matter, because you dont know what it feels like.

ITS “NATIVE AMERICAN” IDIOTS! NOT “INDIAN”! INDIANS ARE FROM INDIA! GET IT STRAIGHT! THE ONLY REASON THEY ARE CALL “NATIVE AMERICANS” “INDIANS” IS BECAUSE THE PEOPLE WHO SAILED TO AMERICA THOUGHT IT WAS INDIA. IT SHOW HOW ABSOLUTELY LAZY, UNEDUCATED, AND PATHETIC SOME PEOPLE ARE! I’M PART NATIVE! NOT INDIAN! GEESH!

@ihateirony so provocating people makes them into hypocrites?
man, no wonder law enforcement and rehabilitation of prisoners suck balls.

If conservatives had their way the entire country would look like a toxic waste dump. They would love to see our air, water and land all saturated with poisons. They must be cheering at the destruction of the Gulf of Mexico at the hands of the criminally insane leaders of British Petroleum.

How is it possible for anyone to be as stupid and ignorant as a conservative? They have no hearts, no minds and no souls. They worship money and corporations. Their gods are evil.

fuck dances with wolves. its just a romanticized film like all Hollywood type movies. if u want a realistic portrayal of native americans, watch Black Robe, it was robbed by DWW.

The Deepwater Horizon oil rig sank on April 22, 2010, the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.

@sortie9 True that, but even the things the indigenous Americans did cannot compare to the things the Europeans did when they came here for gold, land, slaves, and freedom from religious persecution.

AVATAR PLOT SUMMARY

I loved this commercial as a child. We would play “crying indian” games and throw garbage and white powdery dog turds at each other. I think, in a way, this commercial shaped my life forever.

Extremely deep.
A little over dramatic, but hey, it’s the 70′s.

@victorinoxical Can’t compare? You aren’t impressed with tribal wars, slavery, human sacrifice or cannibalism? The Euros just engaged in a war of conquest through migration and colonization such as was common in those days. Most of the native people died from diseases to which they had no immunity. Oops…sucks to be them but shit happens. People today should stop whining about stuff that happened centuries ago to people they never knew. Live in the present. Make something of yourself today.

@GracePCosmetics – Actually, you’re just replacing one misnomer with another. I am a native American – meaning I was born here. I have a better term that I employ: Indigenous American. I think it says what you want to say: “Indigenous” means “WE WERE HERE FIRST.”

@jimspy1001 I’m not sure. I believe “indigenous” indicates “originating in” a region. The people inhabiting North America today, and throughout the history of civilization for that matter, all originated in Africa. So While “Indian” is a misnomer, so is Native American and Indigenous American. While “First People” might seem an accurate description, it’s widely accepted that the people of the Clovis culture or even earlier cultures were the first human inhabitants of the New World.

@coffeekid99 – Well, in a sense, the only indigenous people in the world, then, would be Africans, and more specifically Kenyans or Tanzanians. Can we agree that “indigenous” would be the least misnomerish misnomer?

@greshamweed: That’s the saddest yet funniest thing I’ve read all day.

The Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded on April 20th, 2010 – the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. I think it’s time for a remake, perhaps using a Houma indigenous, paddling his canoe through oil-mucked swamps.

@jimspy1001 Can’t argue with that!

This was an interesting show on PBS that really opened my eyes –

Journey of Man: A Genetic Odyssey – it’s on youtube in 14 parts. Well worth a watch.
